Sanctions Dodging Russian Tanker Goes Rogue in Baltic Waters Near Germany

A tanker carrying Russian oil, part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” is drifting uncontrollably near Germany’s coastline in the Baltic Sea, raising environmental and geopolitical concerns. The vessel, identified as the Eventin, holds approximately 99,000 tons of crude oil and was spotted north of the island of Rügen, according to reports by BILD and UNN.

The Eventin, a Panama-flagged tanker measuring 248 meters, departed from the Russian port of Ust-Luga on January 6. Its intended destination is the port of Said in Egypt. The vessel lost control in the Baltic Sea, prompting an emergency response by Germany’s Maritime Rescue Service. Efforts to secure the drifting ship are ongoing, as concerns grow over the environmental risks of such a large oil shipment in precarious conditions.

The Eventin is part of what is widely referred to as Russia’s “shadow fleet,” a group of over 100 aging tankers and cargo ships used to bypass Western sanctions imposed in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This fleet operates under the radar, often registered under flags of convenience like Panama, with ownership details shrouded in secrecy.

The shadow fleet plays a critical role in Russia’s efforts to maintain its oil exports despite sanctions, which limit its access to Western markets and shipping networks. These vessels are frequently described as being in poor technical condition, raising safety concerns as they navigate international waters.

As of now, the situation remains under observation, with authorities working to mitigate the risks posed by the drifting tanker. Environmental advocates and maritime experts have expressed alarm over the potential for spills, given the vessel’s age and the volume of oil onboard.
