July 19, 2024 — The tourism sector in Mombasa faces a potential decline as protests against the government continue. Stakeholders in the industry are concerned that the unrest could deter tourists and impact the local economy.

Impact on Tourism

The tourism industry in Mombasa, a key destination for holidaymakers, is experiencing a drop in bookings due to ongoing protests. Industry insiders have reported that tourism relies heavily on stability and safety, and the current situation could lead to fewer visitors.

Some hotels are already seeing the effects. Carolynne Kurumei, Sales Manager at Travellers Hotel, revealed that approximately 30% of guests have canceled their trips out of safety concerns. In response, the hotel is working to encourage visitors to reschedule rather than cancel outright.

“We have been significantly affected by these protests,” Kurumei said. “Guests are hesitant to visit Mombasa for vacations or even business meetings due to the current instability.”

Decrease in New Tourist Arrivals

The number of new international visitors interested in traveling to Kenya has also decreased substantially. Mohammed Hersi, a stakeholder in the tourism sector, noted that alarming images of kidnappings, murders, and violence broadcasted from Kenya are causing concern among potential tourists.

“Tourists are questioning why they should visit Kenya when it seems the locals are not at peace,” Hersi explained. “The negative media coverage is impacting their decision to travel here.”

Effect on Peak Tourist Season

Mombasa is a popular destination during the holiday and festive seasons. Hotel operators typically expect a surge in visitors between July and September. However, the ongoing protests are creating uncertainty about attracting guests during this crucial period.

“We hope for a return to normalcy,” Kurumei added. “If the protests continue, it will be challenging to attract guests to our hotels during the holiday season.”

Hotel Adjustments

At Sarova Whitesands Hotel, General Manager Francis Msengeti confirmed that some guests have changed their travel dates. Despite the cancellations, many potential visitors still want to come to Mombasa but are uncertain due to the protests.

“We have seen guests postponing their trips after making reservations,” Msengeti said. “However, many still wish to visit Mombasa to complete their vacations or meetings, once the situation stabilizes.”
