Massive Job Opportunities Ahead as Kilwa Fishing Port Nears Completion
The construction of the Kilwa Fishing Port in Lindi Region has reached 63% completion, according to the Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Abdallah Ulega. The port is a strategic project aimed at creating jobs for youth and boosting national revenue.
During his visit to the site on July 30, 2024, Minister Ulega highlighted that the project, funded entirely by the government, will cost a total of TSh 289 billion. He expressed satisfaction with the progress and emphasized the importance of completing the project by February 2025. “I am pleased with the progress so far, but I urge everyone to avoid complacency. This project must be finished on time to provide employment opportunities,” Ulega stated.
The minister emphasized that the port should be viewed as a milestone for development and should be maintained to ensure its sustainability. Upon completion, the port is expected to enhance the economy of Lindi Region and contribute significantly to the national economy.
George Kwandu, the project manager from the Ministry of Fisheries, acknowledged the directives given by Minister Ulega and assured that they would be implemented. “We have received clear instructions on maintaining quality and meeting deadlines. Our aim is to avoid any complaints from the workforce and complete the project as planned,” Kwandu said.
Local resident Moza Salumu expressed gratitude for the project, noting its potential to provide both temporary and permanent employment. “This project will greatly benefit us, especially the youth and women, by offering various business opportunities as people from different areas come here,” Salumu added.
Currently, 570 young people are employed in the construction of the fishing port. Once completed, the project is expected to create employment for 30,000 individuals across Tanzania.
The fishing sector in Tanzania currently contributes 1.8% to the national GDP, with government goals set to increase this contribution to 10% by the year 2036/2037.
