In Rombo, Kilimanjaro, the government has allocated over Sh1.5 billion for the construction of a new banana market at Mamsera. This investment aims to provide banana farmers in the district with a designated and secure space to sell their produce.

Due to a lack of space, banana farmers have been forced to set up their products along the roadside, creating long-standing challenges for them. This situation has been a persistent issue as they struggle to find adequate space to sell their bananas.

During a visit to the Mamsera market, Deputy Minister of Agriculture David Silinde expressed the government’s commitment to improving conditions for farmers across the country. Silinde emphasized the need for every Tanzanian to benefit from productive agriculture.

Once completed, the new market will be able to accommodate up to 119,625 tons of bananas per day, with sales occurring twice a week. Silinde praised the local government for initiating this project, describing it as a positive step. He assured that the funds are allocated and the construction will be completed soon, which will benefit the farmers and contribute to the local revenue.

Godwin Chacha, the Director of the Rombo District Council, noted that the local government has already contributed Sh70 million towards the initial stages of construction. Chacha highlighted that the project will significantly benefit banana farmers in the area once completed.

The new market will address previous issues related to poor infrastructure, and the government has already identified solutions, including the construction of a modern facility.

Matilda Saria, a local banana farmer, shared her experiences, noting that the old market infrastructure was inadequate and forced vendors to conduct business in unfavorable conditions despite paying local taxes. She expressed hope that the new market will alleviate these challenges and improve their trading environment.
