Recent revelations indicate that some of the projects inaugurated by President William Ruto in the Kisii region were initially started by his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta. An analysis by Taifa Leo has uncovered that many of the projects inaugurated by Ruto were already in the final stages of completion before he took office.

During his visit, President Ruto endorsed the construction of a cancer treatment hospital in Kisii. He highlighted that once completed, the facility would greatly improve essential healthcare services for patients. However, Ruto did not mention that this project was funded by a loan from Saudi Arabia, arranged by Kenyatta’s administration, which planned to build four such facilities across the country.

When Kenyatta visited Kisii in 2019, he stated, “The increase in cancer cases is very concerning. My administration has mobilized resources to build four centers to address this issue. I am pleased to report that Kisii will benefit from this initiative.”

The Auditor General’s report confirms that all project processes were completed, and Kenya received a loan to build the Kisii Cancer Center. According to the report, “The project was financed through a loan agreement signed on June 3, 2015, between the Republic of Kenya (borrower) and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) for KSh 1 billion, and on April 12, 2017, between the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) and the Republic of Kenya for KSh 1 billion.”

During his speech in Kisii this week, President Ruto said, “As you know, this project has been long-awaited, but I visited Saudi Arabia last year and agreed with them to help us so that our government can build a quality cancer center here in Kisii.”

In Nyamira, President Ruto also inaugurated the rehabilitation of the Eronge (D209) road. However, this same road had been inaugurated earlier by former Minister of Roads James Macharia, in collaboration with then-Minister of Interior Dr. Fred Matiang’i.

Additionally, President Ruto inaugurated the Sirare-Kisii-Ahero road, whose construction had begun under Kenyatta’s administration.
