Eldoret, often referred to as the “Home of Champions,” has officially been designated as a city in Kenya. This upgrade was announced by President William Ruto during a grand ceremony at Eldoret Sports Club.
Previously a municipality in Uasin Gishu County, Eldoret is now the fifth city in Kenya, joining Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru. Located 2,100 meters above sea level, south of the Cherangani Hills, Eldoret’s new status was celebrated with a vibrant event.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, several ministers, Uasin Gishu County leaders, Olympic athletes who competed in Paris, France, and thousands of Kenyans. Before the event, President Ruto held a meeting with the Olympic athletes at the Eldoret State House, where medalists received cash rewards.
Following the meeting, President Ruto led a procession from the State House to Eldoret Sports Club, marking the city’s elevation to its new status. He signed the legislation to upgrade Eldoret’s status and received the city’s official seal and other administrative tools from Felix Kosgei, the Chief Public Service Officer, and the Speaker of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly.
During the ceremony, President Ruto symbolically presented 14 keys representing the counties in Western Kenya, which are expected to benefit from the development and economic opportunities associated with Eldoret’s new city status.
In addition, several individuals were honored with national awards for their contributions to Eldoret’s growth. These included posthumous awards to Ezekiel Barngetuny and athlete Vivian Cheruiyot, who both received the Order of the Burning Spear. Former Mayor Joseph Lesiew was awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya.
The process to elevate Eldoret began with a proposal from the Eldoret Municipal Board on May 23, 2023. On January 23, 2024, the Senate approved the recommendation from the National Assembly team to upgrade Eldoret. The committee’s recommendation was based on Eldoret meeting the requirements set out in the Cities and Municipalities Act of 2011.
