MINOT, ND (KXNET) — Thanksgiving week is the busiest airline travel time of the year, which leads to massive lines and crowded airports — even in less-populated states like North Dakota. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to make the travel process much less stressful for everyone involved.

“During the holidays,” explains Minot International Airport’s Director Jennifer Eckman, “we tend to have a lot of passengers who don’t travel on a regular basis. We want everyone to have a safe, enjoyable travel experience, and there are things they can do to help make that happen.”

Eckman states that those who are traveling domestically should arrive at the airport a minimum of one hour before their flight is scheduled to leave (our columnist suggests earlier at larger airports). International travelers, meanwhile, should arrive at least two hours beforehand.

Below is a list of other tips from Eckman and the Minot International Airport on making the travel process easier.

  • Use gift bags instead of wrapping gifts. If wrapped items set off security screening alarms, they may need to be unwrapped so TSA officers can inspect them.
  • Not all foods can be transported in carry-on luggage. If it can be spilled, spread, sprayed, pumped, or poured, and the quantity exceeds 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters), pack it in a checked bag. Cakes, pies, and casseroles may travel in carry-on luggage, but could also require additional screening.
  • Put some form of identification inside your luggage, in case the ID tag on the outside falls off.
  • Contact your airline directly for any concerns about lost luggage.
  • Parking lot plugins are available in some long-term lots during cold weather.

In addition to this information, it’s also important to know that weather changes can prompt flight prompts. Announcements on flight delays or cancelations will usually begin with your airline, and follow on the airport’s website.
