TOPEKA (KSNT) – A jury in Shawnee County found a man guilty following a five-day trial of murder in the first degree and other charges connected to a 2023 Topeka killing.
Katie Garceran with the Shawnee County District Attorney’s office said in a press release that Jacorey Porter, 24, was found guilty following a jury trial on Friday, Nov. 8. Porter’s charges stem from an incident in September last year that lead to the death of 44-year-old Jeremy Palmer.
- Voluntary manslaughter.
- Murder in the first degree.
- Criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling, building or structure.
- Aggravated endangering a child.
Police were called on Sept. 28, 2023 to the 3700 block of Southwest Park South Court after receiving reports of a shooting in the area. Officers found Porter who said he was involved in the shooting incident and had sustained injuries.
The Topeka Police Department detained Porter and moved into a nearby home where they found Palmer lying on his back in the hallway. First responders declared Palmer to be dead at the scene while Porter was taken to a hospital for treatment. Porter was later charged with murder in connection to the incident on Oct. 4, 2023.
Porter is set for a sentencing date at 4 p.m. on Jan. 8, 2025.
