MINOT, N.D. (KXNET) — Many veterans have lived a life of sacrifice, giving their all so we can be safe. In honor of these individuals, the American Legion’s Post 52 hosted its Veterans Day program in Mohall. They’ve been having this veterans program for many years, and say they do so for a very special cause.
“It’s to honor our veterans,” says program helper Jessica Fitzsimmons, “and to show what they have sacrificed for us.”
99-year-old Richard Kinley is a U.S. Army Korean Veteran, and he is one of the many who attended the program.
“I was drafted, and after I was wounded, I had an opportunity to come home,” he states. “I figured I should stay, and I did.”
Jon Weathers, an Air Force veteran who served from 1966 to 1970, also shared what this program means to him.
“It a remembrance of people we served with,” he explains. “People that didn’t come back, and people that give us the right to be here and do as we please.”
Weathers says he believes when you turn 18, you should serve two years in the service —whether you are in a wheelchair or able to walk — because everyone has something to offer the country allowing you to live here.
During the ceremony, The MLS band played a few songs, while Clint Bickle gave the Veterans Day address. The Minot Air Force Base Honor Guard also presented the colors. along with a flag-folding ceremony and a cannon salute for fallen comrades.
“I think it just shows our respect for the veterans,” Fitzsimmons adds. “What they have done for us, and the freedom that we have today. Our veterans can come and see that we honor them, and respect everything they have done for us.”
Fitzsimmons later stated that she enjoys every bit of the event, when not helping out behind the scenes.
“I love it all, I think,” she concludes. “I just think it’s a great thing to attend, and I think everybody should at least go to one Veterans Day program in their life if they haven’t been to one. It gives you a warm feeling when you are done.”
