YEMASSEE, S.C. (WSAV) – An additional five monkeys have been recovered following the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center escape last week, bringing the total number to 30.
The Yemassee Police Department (YPD) announced on their Facebook page on Monday, Nov. 11, that the five rhesus macaques had been safely returned. Originally, 43 primates escaped the facility.
On 5:00 p.m. Sunday, YPD announced that 25 had been safely recovered. The department continues to encourage people to stay safe.
“We cannot stress enough the importance of the public avoiding the area,” wrote the YPD on Facebook. “And under no circumstances should drones be operated near the facility, as they can startle the animals and cause further stress.”
The search for the remaining monkeys will continue throughout the week.
