WILLISTON, ND (KXNET) — A fire broke out Thursday in Williston, destroying two garages and causing heat damage to five homes amid reports that fireworks were ignited in the area.
According to the Williston Fire Department (WFD), at 10:08 p.m. on Thursday, November 7, firefighters responded to a residential garage fire on the 2700 block of 19th Avenue West. They were told a garage was fully engulfed, and also received reports of explosions.
WFD activated a 1st Alarm response, which includes two fire engines, a ladder truck, members of the paid on-call staff, and command staff. The City of Williston Police Department (WPD) and Williams County Emergency Management also responded on scene.
Upon arrival, crews observed an active fire in three garage units, which was endangering nearby homes and other garages. The fire was put out at 10:39 p.m. after destroying two attached garages and everything inside. A third non-attached garage suffered fire damage, and five homes and one parked car were damaged from heat exposure.
All residents were able to return to their homes.
The WFD Fire Prevention Division was able to determine the origin of the fire, but the cause is still considered undetermined, though they were able to rule out electrical causes.
There were multiple reports of at least one firework being ignited in the area, and fireworks materials were found near the scene. The fire is considered to be non-intentional.
