VIDALIA, Ga. (WSAV) – Vidalia Mayor Doug Roper released a statement on social media Thursday night after a serious rain event hit the city.

“I’m really at a loss for words of how to start this or what to even say,” the statement began.

Roper said the city saw widespread flooding, road collapses, downed trees and boat rescues in neighborhoods.

This comes as Vidalia deals with the impacts of Hurricane Helene.

His statement continued:

But here is what I do know: we are strong, we are resilient, we love each other, we have amazing first responders, and we might bend but we will not break. I give you my word we will continue to move mountains to meet our community’s needs. We won’t stop. We will turn over every leaf and look for every resource to help get us through it and be stronger on the back side. In the midst of yet another storm, know your team ran into the storm rather than away from it.

Roper also shared a message from City Manager Josh Beck:

“Everyone is evacuated that needed to be. Everyone is accounted for. No fatalities, no missing persons.”

“Praise God for this message as it could have very easily been a different narrative,” Roper added.
