Victoria Spartz has secured her position representing Indiana’s 5th congressional district, winning by a substantial margin of 57%, the Associated Press reports.
Despite being born in Ukraine, she did not vote for the Senate foreign aid bill in April 2024, which contained more than $60 billion in assistance for Ukraine.
Spartz, who immigrated to the United States in 2000 from Ukraine’s Chernihiv Oblast, made history in 2021 as the first Ukrainian-born Congress member. Reports note her strong alignment with former President Donald Trump and support from gun-owner associations and pro-life organizations.
Her position on Ukraine has evolved since Russia’s invasion. While initially backing aid efforts, she later criticized Ukrainian leadership, particularly the head of the Ukrainian presidential Office, Andriy Yermak.
The election occurs amid broader political shifts, with reports indicating Donald Trump claimed his victory in the US 2024 election and Republicans gaining Senate control.
