STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — The Statesboro Police Department (SPD) is bringing their radio scanner to the web, letting residents get live updates as 911 calls come in and officers go to check it out.
They’re calling it a virtual ride-along. It’s designed for residents to keep up with what’s happening in their neighborhoods – through posts on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“[We’re] trying to take advantage of those platforms and just get that message out there that these officers are doing a very busy job in a very busy town, and this is sort of what that looks like in real time.”
Officials told WSAV that it’s supposed to give the public insight into what goes on in a 10-hour shift for Statesboro police.
“You have times where it’s going to be not much at all happening – pretty mundane, and you may have other situations that are a lot more dynamic,” said Akins.
They said that they plan to post about the scenes their officers are headed to on their page @PDofStatesboro. Alerts will go out with a general location and be updated with how everything turned out.
‘We’ll start out small, see if the response to it is good,” said Akins. “We’ve talked with folks in other departments that did that and their community response was positive with it so it’s just another way to try and establish ourselves on that social media platform.”
Akins said they get lots of worried calls from parents of college students and that this way there will be a record of their calls with easy access.
There isn’t a set date on when they’ll start, but Statesboro Police want to hear community feedback on the project when it comes out.
