TOPEKA (KSNT) – The family of Dr. Roy Menninger and members of the Topeka community are grieving his loss after his death earlier this month.
Roy and his family brought mental health resources and awareness to Topeka for decades. Many are still pained by his loss on Oct. 24 at the age of 97, including Roy’s brother, Walter Menninger.
“He was thoughtful and caring and he was a wonderful ambassador for Menninger,” Walter said.
The Menninger Clinic, founded in 1925, provided housing for those in need of psychiatric treatment. Roy took over as the CEO in 1967 following the death of his father.
“During his leadership, the institution grew and expanded in programs,” Walter said. “He was a good ambassador for mental health issues all across the country.”
The Menninger clinic left Topeka for Houston in 2003. The buildings left behind can still be found at Cedar Crest Park.
“The institution really kept a family of employees,” Walter said. “People felt a connection, people who worked at Menninger, and they still feel that way. There’s an extraordinary loyalty to the concept and the activity.”
