ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — A year after making the cut to successfully resume his football career following a near-death experience, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin reached a new plateau in his comeback in being selected a season-opening starter. Coach Sean McDermott announced the news by saying Hamlin will be paired with Taylor Rapp when the Bills take the field in hosting the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The fourth-year player was hardly assured of winning a staring job, even with both spots being open. The promotion for the 26-year-old Hamlin comes some 20 months since he went into cardiac arrest and needed to be resuscitated on the field during a game at Cincinnati.

Jack Draper reaches US Open semifinals and Karolina Muchova gets back there after wrist surgery

NEW YORK (AP) — Jack Draper has defeated Alex de Minaur 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 to become the first man since 2020 to reach the U.S. Open semifinals without dropping a set. The No. 25 seed from Britain relied on his serve that reached 128 mph Wednesday to set up some of his 40 winners in the match, and he broke the 10th-seeded de Minaur’s serve six times. Draper is the first British man to reach the U.S. Open semifinals since Andy Murray won the title in 2012. He will face either top-seeded Jannik Sinner or No. 5 Daniil Medvedev in Friday’s semifinals.

US Open: Tiafoe, Fritz and Navarro reach the semifinals and make American tennis matter again

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s been 21 years since an American man won a Grand Slam title, but the country is guaranteed a male finalist at the U.S. Open this weekend. That’s because Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz set up an all-U.S. semifinal that will take place Friday. One of the two 26-year-olds will become the first man from the United States to play in a title match at any major tournament since Andy Roddick lost to Roger Federer in 2009. American men’s tennis matters for the first time in a long time — and there also will be at least one woman from the country, Emma Navarro, in the women’s semifinals Thursday.

PARIS (AP) — Fadi Aldeeb got the competing out of the way early at the Paralympic Games. He’s been using the rest of the time to talk. The only Paralympian in the Palestinian delegation in Paris, Aldeeb feels he bears special responsibility to represent all Palestinians living in Gaza, the West Bank and elsewhere. He tries not to think about his own situation. He says “I’m their voice.” The 40-year-old Aldeeb, who uses a wheelchair, was the Palestinian flag bearer during the Games’ opening ceremony, two days before he placed last in the men’s shot put for seated athletes with a season best throw of 8.81 meters.

Scheffler and DeChambeau part of PGA Tour-LIV Golf match in Las Vegas, report says

Golfweek reports there will be a made-for-TV match involving top players from the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. The manager for world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and five-time major champion Brooks Koepka confirms that Scheffler and Rory McIlroy will take on Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. Among details still to be announced were when in December the match would be held and on which course. The only other times they face each other are in the four majors and the Olympics.

Rangers put SS Corey Seager on IL with hip issue that could end his season

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Corey Seager has been put on the 10-day injured list because of hip discomfort that could end the All-Star shortstop’s third season with the Texas Rangers. The move was made before the Rangers played their series finale Wednesday against the New York Yankees. Seager hadn’t played Tuesday night after being the designated hitter in the series opener Monday. General manager Chris Young says he can’t say that Seager is finished for the season because the Rangers didn’t yet have the full medical diagnosis. The Rangers have 22 games left after Wednesday.

Pro Picks: Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will begin three-peat quest with a win over the Ravens

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will raise their championship banner and begin their quest to become the first team to three-peat in the Super Bowl era. Despite leading the NFL with 13 wins last season, the Ravens fell short against the Chiefs, losing 17-10 at home. Jackson ended up winning the NFL MVP award for the second time in five years but it was bittersweet after another playoff disappointment.

Blue Jackets players, GM try to make sense of tragedy after deaths of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Columbus Blue Jackets are trying to make sense of the death Johnny Gaudreau less than three weeks before training camps open around the NHL. General manager Don Waddell and players including Boone Jenner, Zach Werenski and Erik Gudbranson met with reporters Wednesday to make their first public comments since Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, were killed while riding their bicycles last week in their home state of New Jersey. Waddell said the immediate focus was on supporting the Gaudreau family. The team is holding a candlelight vigil at night with 13 minutes, 21 seconds of silent remembrance in honor of Johnny and Matthew’s jersey numbers.

Volleyball popularity at all-time high for girls amid US Olympic success and college game’s exposure

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Girls volleyball has never been so popular. Participation has increased every year since at least 1980 — excluding the 2020-21 pandemic — and has accelerated the last decade. The number of girls high school volleyball players in 2022-23 hit 470,000, second only to outdoor track and field. Girls high school basketball has trailed volleyball in participation since 2014-15. USA Volleyball reported a record 333,000 junior girls ages 11 to 18 registered with clubs as of July. That’s a 40% increase over 10 years. Fueling the growth is the United State’s success in the Olympics and greater exposure of college volleyball.

Paralympians face nuanced nutrition challenges. Dietitians seek solutions

Paris (AP) — While the basics of nutrition remain consistent, many para athletes and their dietary teams face nuanced challenges when it comes to nutrition strategy. They must consider two primary factors: first, the food itself and its specific impact on each individual athlete; second, the accessibility of that food. Scientists and athletic personnel are workshopping their own solutions even as research lags behind.
