Zaporizhzhia Constructs New 1,000-Seat Underground School

Zaporizhzhia is constructing another underground school in a continued effort to provide safe educational spaces for students amid ongoing war against the Russian invasion. The new facility, part of the Safe Offline Education project, is designed to accommodate up to 1,000 pupils. This initiative comes as the region prioritizes both education and safety for its young residents.

Ivan Fedorov, the head of the Zaporizhzhia regional military administration, shared updates about the project on his official Facebook page. According to Fedorov, significant progress has already been made on the construction of the school, which is located nearly seven meters underground to ensure maximum protection. The building will cover a total area of 1,300 square meters.

The school will be able to hold 500 students at a time in one shift, or up to 1,000 students when operating two shifts. Fedorov reported that the main stages of construction are nearly complete, including the excavation for the pit, the foundation, and 80% of the vertical structures. Work is currently focused on installing the lift shaft, staircases, and additional concrete structures to finalize the underground facility.

Construction is expected to be completed within the next six to seven months, which will make this underground school another key part of the local educational infrastructure. This school is one of the latest additions to the Safe Offline Education project, which began in 2024 with the goal of creating secure places for students to learn in the midst of the war. To date, 11 underground schools have been planned, with two already finished and ready to accommodate students.
