Base Titanium Seeks New Prospecting License in Kwale County

Base Titanium has submitted an application for a prospecting license to explore titanium, rutile, zircon, and ilmenite minerals in Kwale County, Kenya. This move is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to assess mineral resources in the region.

Public Participation Process

The Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs has issued a public notice inviting community members to share their opinions on the application. The public has 21 days to submit feedback regarding the prospecting license. Any objections to the application can be sent to the Cabinet Secretary within the same timeframe.

Transition Plans for Kwale Operations

Base Titanium has indicated that the existing Kwale Ore Reserves are expected to be fully depleted by December 2024. As a result, the company plans to transition to post-mining operations once the reserves are exhausted. This transition is part of the company’s strategy to manage the area’s resources responsibly.

Accessing the Application Information

The application details can be found on the Ministry of Mining’s portal at miningcadastre.go.ke and have also been published in the Kenya Gazette. This public notice aims to ensure transparency and community involvement in the decision-making process.

Efforts to Extend Kwale Operations

Tim Carstens, Managing Director of Base Resources, stated that the company has explored all options to extend the life of the Kwale Operations. Despite their extensive efforts and support from the local community, they have been unable to locate additional mineral deposits of sufficient quality or quantity to justify a further extension of mining activities.

Focus on Closure Planning

Carstens emphasized that the company is now focusing on detailed closure planning and transitioning to post-mining land use. This involves maximizing the value extracted from the remaining ore reserves while preparing for the future.

Reflecting on the Kwale Operations

Kwale Operations have been crucial to the development of Base Resources. Carstens acknowledged the emotional aspect of ending mining operations that the company takes great pride in. However, he views the transition to post-mining as an opportunity to enhance their reputation for excellence throughout the entire mining lifecycle.
